Coastal Fortification on the Gulf of Mexico

Until the late 1940's, coastal fortification was a primary line of defense for the United States.

Several distinct generations of coastal fortification exist, each a unique insight into a period of U.S. history.

Along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, coastal fortifications of four generations, the Third System (1817-1867), the Endicott period (1890-1910), the post World War I period (1918-1936), and the World War II era (1937-1945) can be found. Over the last couple of years, I have had the opportunity to visit several sites which have examples of these periods of fortification.

In the following pages, I have included pictures of the fortifications from several sites. They are divided by location, and further subdivided by era when possible.
